Student Health Services and Student Insurance

Burnett School of Medicine students are required to carry and provide proof of medical insurance. Students who are enrolled at the School of Medicine are eligible for the TCU sponsored insurance plan but are not required to purchase the plan. Family members of students enrolled at the school of medicine are eligible for the TCU sponsored insurance plan. Health services at TCU’s Brown-Lupton Health Center are available to all currently enrolled, degree seeking students regardless of their insurance coverage. Students at the School of Medicine may choose to seek their care at the TCU Brown Lupton Student Health Center. Student Health Insurance

All SOM students must either purchase the TCU Health Insurance Plan or provide proof of outside health insurance coverage prior to matriculation and yearly throughout medical school. Health Insurance is required of all SOM students. All SOM students and their dependents are eligible to enroll in the TCU Health Insurance Plan.

The TCU Brown-Lupton Health Center is located on the TCU campus.

The TCU Health Center is a primary care clinic with an enclosed pharmacy staffed by seven medical providers (including four physicians in family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine, two physician assistants, and one nurse practitioner), nine nurses, a registered pharmacist, and a licensed dietician. The TCU Brown-Lupton Health Center offers laboratory diagnostic services, and preventive and therapeutic health services, including immunizations, and additionally provides a variety of health care services that include, but are not limited to, the following services:

• Allergy injections

• Chronic disease management

• Emergency contraception

• Illness and injury care

• Immunizations

• Laboratory services

• Minor surgical procedures

• Nutrition consults

• Physical exams

• Physical therapy evaluation

• Prescriptions and over the counter medications

• Referral for x-ray services

• Referral to specialists

• Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) testing

• Women’s health services

Students are notified of availability of these services during Introduction to Medicine as well as through reminders via student affairs student communications. Through the School of Medicine THRIVE Medical Student Wellbeing Initiative, during Introduction to Medicine, students are educated about mental health services. Additional references are provided throughout the academic year to all students via class meetings where information about physical and mental health resources and access to them is shared by the office for student affairs and the School of Medicine Student Senators. Additionally, handouts are posted throughout the medical school offices with information on the TCU Counseling Center and associated resources, TCU Campus Health Center, Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, Campus Advocacy, Resources & Education (CARE) office, campus police, and School of Medicine student affairs and professionalism resource officer services and personnel.

The TCU Brown-Lupton Health Center physicians do not precept medical students, and no School of Medicine students rotate at the TCU Brown-Lupton Health Center.

Accessing health care services meets the criteria for an excused absence per the school of medicine. Additionally, the unscheduled time in Phase 1 courses and scheduled “white space” and unscheduled half days in the longitudinal integrated clerkship are times that students may use to schedule health services appointments. Students are made aware of the attendance policy and procedures for requesting absences in new student orientation (Introduction to Medicine), and the policy is included in all course syllabi and included as a policy in the student handbook. Faculty course directors and faculty preceptors are made aware of the policy during new faculty orientation and the resident as educator training modules. In addition, course faculty are reminded of this policy during annual course meetings. The policy is available to faculty through the school of medicine faculty handbook and included in all course syllabi.

Each student policy is in the school of medicine student handbook. Students must annually acknowledge compliance with all school of medicine policies via a review of the student handbook. Students receive e-mail notifications from myRecordTracker to inform them when items are due. Continuing students complete this process in May and June of each year, and new students complete this process in June and July upon matriculation.
