FMLY 86004 Indigent and Rural Healthcare

The student will work in a free clinic in Granbury, TX, seeing patients that lack access to affordable healthcare. Patients are 0-22 years old, must reside in Hood County, Texas, and self-report that they do not have private insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare. Chronic and acute care is provided along with access to free medications and medical supplies. The student will also work in juvenile correctional facilities in Granbury and Brownwood, TX, assisting in the care of incarcerated 11-18-year-old male and female inmates. Chronic conditions and acute care are both provided including minor procedures such as suturing, splinting, abscess incision/drainage, and joint reductions. 24/7 telehealth services are provided at all locations and students will be added to text, voice, and video communications. There may also be additional opportunities to work with Dr. Bonnell providing rural healthcare during house calls, telehealth global medicine consults, school nurse assistance, high school football game sideline coverage, and public school health care teaching for students/teachers.
